Methane as a dominant absorber in the habitable-zone sub-Neptune K2-18 b

چکیده
In their Letter, Tsiaras et al. reported the detection of water vapour in atmosphere K2-18 b, an exoplanet 7 to 10 Earth masses located habitable zone M-dwarf star. The is based on absorption feature seen at 1.4 $\mu$m observations transiting with Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3. We have simulated mean temperature structure and composition K2-18b using a radiative-convective equilibrium model we present here corresponding transit spectroscopy calculations. argue that most likely due methane, gas expected be abundant hydrogen-helium cold sub-Neptunes. More generally, show 1.4-$\mu$m spectra not diagnostic presence for sub-Neptunes having effective less than 600 K dominates over methane this wavelength only larger temperatures.

Planet formation in the habitable zone of alpha Centauri B
Recent studies have shown that alpha Centauri B might be, from an observational point of view, an ideal candidate for the detection of an Earth-like planet in or near its habitable zone (0.5-0.9AU). We study here if such habitable planets can form, by numerically investigating the planet-formation stage which is probably the most sensitive to binarity effects: the mutual accretion of km-sized p...
متن کاملThe Habitable Zone Gallery
The Habitable Zone Gallery is a new service to the exoplanet community that provides habitablezone (HZ) information for each of the exoplanetary systems with known planetary orbital parameters. The service includes a sortable table with information on the percentage of orbital phase spent within the HZ, planetary effective temperatures, and other basic planetary properties. In addition to the t...
متن کاملOn the “ Galactic Habitable Zone ”
The concept of Galactic Habitable Zone (GHZ) was introduced a few years ago as an extension of the much older concept of Circumstellar Habitable Zone. However, the physical processes underlying the former concept are hard to identify and even harder to quantify. That difficulty does not allow us, at present, to draw any significant conclusions about the extent of the GHZ: it may well be that th...
متن کاملThe habitable zone and extreme planetary orbits.
The habitable zone for a given star describes the range of circumstellar distances from the star within which a planet could have liquid water on its surface, which depends upon the stellar properties. Here we describe the development of the habitable zone concept, its application to our own solar system, and its subsequent application to exoplanetary systems. We further apply this to planets i...
متن کاملHydrogen Greenhouse Planets beyond the Habitable Zone
We show that collision-induced absorption allows molecular hydrogen to act as an incondensible greenhouse gas, and that bars or tens of bars of primordial H2-He mixtures can maintain surface temperatures above the freezing point of water well beyond the “classical” habitable zone defined for CO2 greenhouse atmospheres. Using a 1-D radiative-convective model we find that 40 bars of pure H2 on a ...
